Florida Golf Courses & Tee Times
Florida's golf goes back to 1886, when John Gillespie built two greens and a fairway behind his Sarasota home, and it grew in the 1890s with the resort hotels along Henry Flagler's and Henry Plant's railroads. The state golf association, the FSGA, formed in 1913 and is based in Tampa. In 2012 it merged with the Florida Women's State Golf Association.

Who runs public golf in Florida
Public golf in Florida is a mix of city courses, daily-fee clubs and resorts. The state's Department of State runs the Florida Historic Golf Trail, launched in 2014, which lists more than 50 historic courses the public can still play. Orlando's Dubsdread (1924, city-owned since 1978) and Sanford's Mayfair (city-owned since 1924) are on it, and Winter Park's 1914 nine was the first Florida course on the National Register of Historic Places. For juniors, the FSGA runs the Florida Junior Tour. Tampa Bay and Southwest Florida have their own city and county courses, covered on those market pages.

Getting a tee time in Florida
Florida is a winter golf destination. The months other places shut down are the busiest here, so November-through-April mornings go first, weekdays included.
Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.
A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
