Dubsdread Golf Course

Named for the dread it put in hackers, or dubs. Tom Bendelow laid it out in 1924, Hogan won the 1945 Orlando Open here, and the greens are still tiny.

About Dubsdread Golf Course

Dubsdread opened on December 7, 1924, with thousands watching, and it says it's the oldest public layout in central Florida. Builder Carl Dann put it at the center of his Golf View Heights subdivision, on streets like Brassie Drive and Niblick Way, and Chicago's Thomas Bendelow designed it. The name is a warning: it was meant to put dread in "dubs," the beginners. Dann is said to have brought home models of famous greens, and the 14th was said to copy the 13th at St Andrews.

It's short, par 70 and 4,100 to 6,100 yards over five sets of tees, but the fairways are narrow and the greens are small and ringed with sand. The map survey has trees along 16 of the 18 holes, seven doglegs and about 41 bunkers, and only about 7 feet between the high and low points, so it's about as flat as golf gets. The history is deep. It hosted the Orlando Open from 1945 to 1947, and Ben Hogan closed with a 67 to win the first one at 270. Patty Berg, Sam Snead and Babe Zaharias played it in the '40s and '50s, and Pete Dye was a regular while at Rollins. Ky Laffoon, a 1935 Ryder Cup player, became the pro in 1936, and legend says he once shot his putter three times after three-putting the 18th. The city bought it from the Dann family in 1978 and closed it for a 16-month rebuild that reopened July 10, 2008, with a new 5th hole and the old 8th and 9th merged into one.
