Winter Park Golf Course

Laid out in 1914 and redone by Riley Johns and Keith Rhebb in 2016. You walk it, crossing the street six times, past a cemetery and the train tracks.

About Winter Park Golf Course

This is golf in the middle of town. The par-35 nine is wrapped by city streets, houses, two churches and a cemetery that runs along the 4th, and the train tracks border the west end, so SunRail and Amtrak roll past as you play. You cross the street six times. Take a pull cart: it's meant to be walked, and the few riding carts are for people who need them. OpenStreetMap survey data shows no water on any hole and about 11 feet of elevation change. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

Harley A. Ward and Dow George laid it out in 1914, and the clubhouse the new Winter Park Country Club built that year is still in use. During World War I the club let sheep and goats graze the links, which also saved on mowing. The course closed in 1926, came back in 1937 as a new nine made from the old 18- and 9-hole layouts, and in 1999 it became the first golf course in Florida on the National Register of Historic Places, along with its clubhouse. The state launched the Florida Historic Golf Trail here in 2014.

The city then spent $1.2 million on a redesign by Riley Johns and Keith Rhebb, with new fairways, greens and irrigation, and reopened it in 2016. Orlando Magazine had already voted it the second best public course in greater Orlando in 2010. The pair also built the Back 9, a free 10,000-square-foot putting course on an old croquet field next to the 9th tee.
