About Mayfair Country Club

Mayfair is Sanford's city-owned course and one of the oldest in Florida. You come in under a double row of oaks that a retired sea captain, Charles Amory, planted in the 1800s, and part of his ship-shaped house is still in the clubhouse. It's a par 72 of 6,370 yards from the blue tees (71.7 rating, 135 slope), with the wider fairways you get on classic-era layouts and trees and hazards doing the work. It's open year round.

The Chase brothers had a 50-man crew build nine holes in 1922, and it opened that year as the Sanford Country Club. The city bought it in 1924 and hired W.D. Clark to rebuild it as an 18. In 1927 it hosted the third leg of Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen's 72-hole grudge match: a spectator stepped on Sarazen's ball on the sixth, his tee shot hit another on the head at the 13th, and Hagen won 5 and 4.

The New York Giants, who trained in Sanford, ran the course from 1953 to 1961 and named it after their Mayfair Inn. From 1955 to 1958 it hosted the Mayfair Inn Open on the PGA Tour, with $15,000 in prize money, and a local history says Arnold Palmer won his first professional check here. In 1959 the LPGA's Sanford Open was won by Hall of Famer Marlene Bauer Hagge.
