Mission Resort & Club - El Campeon

George O'Neil laid it out in 1917 on 85-plus feet of Florida hills. The 4th carries Lake Beverly, then climbs 60 feet to the green.

About Mission Resort & Club - El Campeon

El Campeón does something almost no Florida course can: it goes up and down. The Florida Historic Golf Trail puts the elevation change at more than 85 feet, with rolling fairways and undulating greens, and the hole people remember is the 4th, a tee shot over Lake Beverly to a fairway that rises 60 feet to a plateau green sloping back to front. It's par 72, with six sets of tees from 4,800 to 7,000 yards. The map survey has water near 12 holes, six tee shots that carry it, trees along 17 holes and about 62 bunkers. It's old, too. William J. Howey, a citrus grower and land promoter building a town out of 60,000 acres, hired Chicago architect George O'Neil to draw an 18 that would bring in investors. O'Neil promised it would be "America's most famous course in a short while." It was promoted as the Howey Golf Club from 1916 and opened officially in 1917, and the 4th was O'Neil's finishing hole back then. About ten years later Captain Charles E. Clarke of Troon, Scotland, reworked it. It has also gone by Chain-O'-Lakes, Bougainvillea Golf Club and Floridan Country Club.

The name means "the Champion." The National Golf Course Owners Association named it Florida Golf Course of the Year in 2009, and it has hosted NCAA events and the Florida state high school finals. A short nature trail, the Trails of the Conquistadors, cuts through the property between the 17th green and 18th tee.
