About Wildhorse Golf Club

Wildhorse is one of the oldest courses in Southern Nevada: construction started in 1958 and golf has been played here since 1959. Howard Hughes bought it from the original developer, Hank Greenspun, in 1968, and in the early 1970s it was a regular PGA Tour stop for the Sahara Invitational. It has gone by Paradise Valley, Showboat Country Club, Los Verdes, Indian Wells and Royal Kenfield. It's been Wildhorse since 1994, and the City of Henderson owns it now.

Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley redesigned it in 2004. It's a traditional course rather than desert target golf: pine- and palm-lined fairways, lakes, and native desert pushing in at the edges of fast, firm fairways. Water is in play on four holes going out and three coming in. The par-3 4th is long, with water down the whole right side, and the par-4 9th squeezes between two lakes and has a reputation as one of the hardest holes in town. Hit it straight there.

It's par 70, 6,525 yards from the Green tees (71.4 rating, 136 slope), down to 4,995 from the Silver. It's fairly flat, and the club says it's one of the few Vegas courses you can walk. The greens are big with moderate slope. It's also an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

It's one of 8 courses in Henderson on Yoink, and the closest alternative is The Legacy Golf Club, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.

What it's like to play Wildhorse Golf Club

You'll carry water off the tee or into the green on 3 holes. There's real elevation change: some holes rise or fall about 43 feet from tee to green. 10 of the 18 holes bend, so position off the tee matters more than length.
