Stallion Mountain Golf Club

Chip Beck shot 59 here in the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational. Colbert and Brauer's design, cut to one 18 in 2004, puts six lakes in play on nine holes.

About Stallion Mountain Golf Club

Stallion Mountain sits on East Flamingo with Sunrise Mountain behind it. It opened in 1991 as Sunrise Golf Club, a 54-hole Jim Colbert and Jeff Brauer facility. When the land became worth more for housing, the owners kept what they thought were the best 18 holes, and in 2004 Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley made them into one course, adding tiered fairways, deep bunkers and more water.

It's a par 72 at 7,120 yards from the back, with four sets of tees. There are mature pines, bunker-lined fairways and six lakes in play on nine holes, so you need the tee ball straight as well as long. The practice area is big: a 16-acre range with 40 tees plus putting, chipping and bunker areas.

The famous round is Chip Beck's 59 in the third round of the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational: 13 birdies, 5 pars, no bogeys, and a $1 million bonus. It also hosted the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Classic and Golf Channel's Big Break II. The club closed suddenly in July 2008, when its roughly 350 members got one day's notice, and it has since reopened under new owners. Encore Leisure Group manages it now.

It's one of 35 courses Yoink watches in the Las Vegas area, and the closest alternative is The Club at Sunrise, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
