Las Vegas National Golf Club

Bert Stamps' 1961 Stardust Country Club: the Rat Pack played it, Palmer set the record in 1967, and Tiger shot 70 here en route to his first win in 1996.

About Las Vegas National Golf Club

Las Vegas National is the old-Vegas course, 10 minutes off the Strip on Desert Inn Road. Bert Stamps designed it, and it opened in October 1961 as the Stardust Country Club, owned by the Stardust hotel. Del Webb bought it in 1969 and renamed it Sahara-Nevada; it was the Sahara, then the Las Vegas Hilton Country Club, before taking its current name in 1998.

It plays like an oasis course, a par 71 under thousands of trees, with palms along the fairways and bunkers around the greens, so where you put the tee ball matters more than how far it goes. By OpenStreetMap survey, 13 of the 18 holes are tree-lined. Two lakes come into play on four holes. There are five par 3s and four mid-length par 5s that give you a shot at birdie. The history is the draw. It hosted the LPGA Championship in 1961, the PGA Tour's Tournament of Champions from 1967 and the Sahara Invitational from 1969 to 1976. Arnold Palmer's 63 in 1967 stood as the course record until Tom Kite shot 62 in 1991. It was part of the Las Vegas Invitational rotation through 1996, the year Tiger Woods won it for his first PGA Tour title; his 70 here was his highest round of the week. The Rat Pack played here in the 1960s, and the movie Casino was filmed here. The house from the film sits left of the first tee, between the 1st and 18th fairways.

It's one of 35 courses Yoink watches in the Las Vegas area, and the closest alternative is Mothman's Retreat, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
