Lubbock & West Texas Golf Courses & Tee Times
West Texas golf is wind, Bermuda fairways and city courses in oil and cotton towns from Lubbock down to the Permian Basin. The headliner is The Rawls Course at Texas Tech in Lubbock, a Tom Doak design that opened in 2003. Doak moved 1.3 million cubic yards of topsoil on a flat cotton field to copy the breaks of the Caprock. Golfweek rated it the No. 2 course in Texas in 2012 and 2013, and it has hosted NCAA regionals, most recently the 2025 women's regional.

Who runs public golf in Lubbock & West Texas
Much of the public golf is municipal. Midland owns The Courses at Hogan Park, 36 holes on the Roadrunner and the Quail, which dates to 1959. As of August 2026 the Quail was being rebuilt with new irrigation, greens and bunkers, and it could reopen as early as October. The Roadrunner closes for the same work after that. Big Spring's city site covers Comanche Trail Municipal, a par-72 course in the hills on the south end of town. Its city page lists a $25 weekday green fee and $30 on weekends. Lamesa has a nine-hole city course open to non-members. Snyder's Sammy Baugh course is a nine on the Western Texas College campus.

Booking tee times in Lubbock & West Texas: the local rules
Tee sheets here are short. Big Spring asks golfers to book Comanche Trail five days in advance, and it closes the course on the second and fourth Mondays for maintenance. Midland takes Hogan Park tee times by phone at 432-685-7360, through an online portal or through its app. Midland plans to close the Roadrunner for renovation once the Quail reopens, so expect one Hogan Park 18 at a time while the work goes on.

Why tee times in Lubbock & West Texas are hard to get
Spring and fall are peak season in Lubbock & West Texas. In summer the heat pushes everyone toward early morning, so the first few hours of the day fill before anything else.
Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.
When tee time cancellations happen
A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.
- Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
- Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
- Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
- Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
- Keep a quicker course in your back pocket. Nine-hole and executive courses are easier to get on and play faster. Around here that includes Olton Country Club.
