East Texas Golf Courses & Tee Times

East Texas golf is Piney Woods golf: tall pines, lakes and small towns from Tyler south to Beaumont and across the Sabine into Louisiana. The oldest public story is in Beaumont, where the Civilian Conservation Corps built the city course in Tyrrell Park in the late 1930s. That course hosted the PGA Tour's Beaumont Open in 1961 and 1962, and it now carries the name of Henry Homberg, the caddie-turned-pro who ran it until 1982 and taught juniors like Dave Marr Jr. and Bruce Lietzke.

Good weekend tee times in East Texas go fast, and the ones that come back later (cancellations, groups that shrink) aren't announced. Yoink watches the tee sheets at 21 public courses here, from Beaumont, Mart, Rusk, Emory and Mineola, and tells you the moment a time you want opens up.

The longest layout here is Brentwood Country Club at 7,129 yards; there is one nine-hole course.

Who runs public golf in East Texas

Municipal golf here is thin, so most public tee times are at daily-fee and resort courses. Beaumont's parks department lists one golf course, Henry Homberg in Tyrrell Park, with senior (60+) and junior (under 18) green fees on its rate page. Diboll, just south of Lufkin, owns Neches Pines and hires an outside manager to run it as a public course. Around the big lakes, Rayburn Resort on Sam Rayburn and Cypress Bend on Toledo Bend sell stay-and-play packages.

Why tee times in East Texas are hard to get

Spring and fall are peak season in East Texas. In summer the heat pushes everyone toward early morning, so the first few hours of the day fill before anything else.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Keep a quicker course in your back pocket. Nine-hole and executive courses are easier to get on and play faster. Around here that includes Mineola Country Club.
