Rayburn is the old resort course in the hills above Lake Sam Rayburn in East Texas. The resort says there's 150 feet of elevation on the property, and it has put in new greens, tees and bunkers. It's a 27-hole club, but the von Hagge nine is under renovation, so the 18 you play now is the original Jay Riviere nine from 1968 and the Robert Trent Jones nine from 1972, which add up to a par 72.
The two nines play differently. Riviere's is the friendlier one: wide fairways, water on only one hole, and sand on every hole, with six holes that also have fairway bunkers. The Jones nine is tighter, has the most doglegs, and puts six of its nine greens up on a rise, so approaches get harder. The climb up the 15th takes you to the highest point on the course. The third nine, Robert von Hagge's from 1979, is the one the resort calls the most challenging: its greens are the smallest on the property, driver often stays in the bag, and it has a 600-yard double dogleg.
