About Rawls Golf Course At Texas Tech
The Rawls Course is Texas Tech's course and Tom Doak's follow-up to Pacific Dunes, and it could hardly be more different. The site was a university agricultural research field with 18 inches of fall from one end to the other. Doak's crew moved 1.3 million cubic yards of topsoil to build a landscape from scratch that imitates the breaks east and south of Lubbock, where the plains start dropping into the canyons of the Caprock. Doak called it probably the most complicated course his firm had done.
The wind is the design. Fairways are wide on purpose, so you can use a quartering wind to hold an approach, and the fairway bunkers jut into the line so you have to decide what you can carry that day. Doak says playing into the wind can take two to five extra clubs. The greens are boldly contoured. The 18th is a 578-yard par 5 with a 4.5-acre lake in front of you and down the right on the second shot.
It's a par 72 from 7,349 yards at the blacks down to 5,493 at the golds. The Red Raider men's and women's teams play here, Golfweek named it the No. 2 course in Texas in 2012 and 2013, and it has hosted NCAA regionals (men in 2015, women in 2005, 2017 and 2025), the NJCAA national championship and U.S. Open and Amateur qualifiers. The $3.7 million clubhouse opened in 2012.
