About South Shore Golf Course
South Shore sits on rolling ground in Staten Island's Rossville neighborhood, off Huguenot Avenue between the West Shore Expressway and Alverson Avenue. It started in 1930 as the private Mayflower Country Club. The hole on the sign is the ninth, a long par 5 with a pond and a fountain in play.
The city bought the property in pieces, in 1966, 1967 and 1982, and Parks ran it until American Golf took over in 1984. Greens on 5, 12, 13 and 14 were rebuilt in 1994, and a new irrigation system went in around 2000. Golf NYC runs it now and says new management from 2024 has meant new carts and tees, fairway drainage and cart-path repairs. The course borders Sandy Ground, settled in the 1830s, which NYC Parks describes as the first free Black community in the nation; the neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places.
