New York Golf Courses & Tee Times
New York's state golf association is the NYSGA, founded on August 9, 1923, at Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford. Its first state championship teed off that October at Garden City Golf Club with 61 entries, and it has held one every year since. For public golfers, the big name is the state itself. New York State Parks runs golf courses from Montauk to the Niagara River, including Bethpage Black, which in 2002 became the first publicly owned and operated course to host the U.S. Open.

Who runs public golf in New York
New York State Parks runs courses on Long Island and across upstate. Robert Trent Jones did three of them: Green Lakes near Syracuse, one of his first; James Baird in the Taconic region; and Montauk Downs, which he redesigned with his son Rees in 1968. Dinsmore, on the Hudson, started as a private nine in the 1890s. Chenango Valley near Binghamton was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. State rates favor residents: at Bethpage, non-residents pay double on the Black and Red. Counties and towns run their own courses with resident cards, such as Nassau's Leisure Pass and Suffolk's Green Key. For juniors, the NYSGA runs Youth on Course: ages 6 to 18 pay $60 a year and play 20-plus New York courses for $5 or less a round.

Getting a tee time in New York
Golf in New York follows the seasons: spring openers and fall weekends are the busiest stretches, and summer mornings fill before afternoons.
Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.
A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
