Green Lakes State Park Golf Course

One of Robert Trent Jones's first courses, opened in 1936 with a Gene Sarazen exhibition. Deep-faced bunkers, few flat lies, glacial-lake views.

About Green Lakes State Park Golf Course

Green Lakes is the state park course east of Syracuse, and it's one of the first courses Robert Trent Jones ever designed. State Parks puts it plainly: the bunkers are deep-faced and you rarely get a flat lie, so practice those sidehill shots before you come. The park itself is built around two blue-green glacial lakes and holds the largest stand of old-growth forest in Central New York, and the writer James Dodson described playing among mature evergreens with a long view over a dark blue lake toward the Adirondack foothills.

Jones drew it in 1935 and, instead of a fee, took a ten-year lease on it at $1 a year. It was built during the Depression, when the state Conservation Department and then the Civilian Conservation Corps put in the park's roads, buildings and golf course. Jones opened it on May 6, 1936, with Gene Sarazen playing an exhibition against Emmett Kelly, the first head pro, in front of more than 1,000 people. Jones came back for the 50th anniversary in 1986.
