About LaTourette Golf Course
LaTourette is Staten Island's big city course: par 72, 6,708 yards across rolling hills and valleys, with historic Richmond Town in view. It's hilly more than tricky. Seven holes (4, 6, 10, 12, 13, 15 and 18) play uphill to the green, but there are few if any blind shots, so what you see is what you get. The New York City Amateur is played here at the end of May, and the March of Dimes Celebrity Charity Event every June. It's also the only course on the island with a practice facility.
The land was the LaTourette family farm, started in 1830. The family sold it to the city in 1928, and the first nine, designed by David L. Rees, opened in 1929. John Van Kleek added nine holes and redesigned the original nine in 1935, and Frank Duane remodeled four holes in 1964. The clubhouse is the family's old mansion, on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982 and restored after a fire in 2001.
Two bits of local lore: Robert Moses' Richmond Parkway plan would have run up the 4th fairway, with an interchange by the 5th and 11th tees, before the community killed it. And Jim Albus, later a winner on the PGA Tour Champions, was the head pro here from 1969 to 1980.
