Marine Park Golf Course

Robert Trent Jones Sr. built it on an old landfill by Jamaica Bay. The city's longest course, with few trees, raised greens and the wind off the bay.

About Marine Park Golf Course

Marine Park is the longest of New York City's public courses: over 7,000 yards from the blues, par 72 with a 35 going out and a 37 coming home. The red tees are just over 5,200 yards, and there are four sets in all. It plays like a links. There are few trees, so the defence is the wind off Jamaica Bay, the unmowed berms and fast greens. The map survey backs up how open it is: trees along only six holes, water near just one, about 44 bunkers and only about 22 feet between the high and low points. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed it in the early 1960s, and the ground under it is a former landfill. The park was built up as a dump, and in the 1960s local kids hunted the rats there with bows and arrows. The New York Times, in a story ASGCA shared, points to its raised, rolling greens as a Trent Jones signature. Stephen Kay has since renovated it.

It's a real Brooklyn muni. It hosts the Brooklyn Open, an unsanctioned tournament open to anyone who pays the $175 entry, and it also hosts the Jamaica Open NY pro-am. There's an irons-only range with grass target greens, chipping and putting greens with a practice bunker, and a glass-walled event room.

It's one of 14 courses Yoink watches in the New York City area, and the closest alternative is Dyker Beach Golf Course (Brooklyn), about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
