About Silver Lake Golf Course (Staten Island)

Silver Lake is a short city course: John Van Kleek's design, par 69 and 6,050 yards, in Silver Lake Park on Staten Island's north shore, where the reservoir dominates the scenery. It's a quick trip from the Staten Island Ferry if you're coming from Manhattan. It's open all year, with the Veranda Restaurant at the clubhouse.

The history is the part people remember. Land from the Marine Cemetery, a nineteenth-century burial ground for the Marine Hospital Quarantine in Tompkinsville, was added to the park in 1924 and turned into golf in 1928, and the course was finished in 1929. Nobody connected the site to the cemetery until researchers found the records in 1994. NYC Parks now says perhaps several thousand immigrants, many of them Irish who fled the Potato Famine and died of contagious disease after landing, are buried under the 18th fairway.
