About Dyker Beach Golf Course (Brooklyn)
Dyker Beach is Brooklyn's big public course, 217 acres in the southwest corner of the borough with the Verrazano Bridge in view. It's a par 71 of 6,548 yards, rated 70.5 with a 116 slope, with tree-lined fairways and open greens, so it's fair to most games. It's the closest full 18 to Manhattan and a short walk from the R train. There's no range, only a putting green and a chipping area, so warm up accordingly.
It goes back to the Dyker Meadow Golf Club, and the course dates its opening to 1897 on a Tom Bendelow design. The number people remember is traffic: Wikipedia calls it the world's busiest course in the 1950s and '60s, with 103,581 rounds played in 1965. Willy 'Wiffy' Cox was the pro from 1921 to 1935, Tiger Woods' father practiced here in the 1970s, and the Shore View Golf Club, incorporated in 1930, still plays here. NYC Parks ran it until 1984, when American Golf took over, and in 2007 the city opened a free youth golf center on the grounds.
It's one of 14 courses Yoink watches in the New York City area, and the closest alternative is Silver Lake Golf Course (Staten Island), about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
