About Spy Ring Golf Club - Spy Ring
Spy Ring is new golf on old ground. For more than 50 years this was Heatherwood Golf Club, an 18-hole executive course of about 4,000 yards. Heatherwood turned the middle of the property into a 55-plus community and hired Tyler Rae to route a brand-new nine around the edges. The Fried Egg called it the first new public course built on Long Island in more than 20 years when it opened in 2024. The name comes from the Culper Spy Ring, a network of spies during the American Revolution.
It maxes out at about 3,100 yards, so you won't need driver everywhere, but you'll want it straight: the tee shots on 2, 3, 4, 8 and 9 all have out of bounds left. The ground is sand with some real movement, and the south end is where it gets good. The par-5 3rd opens with a tee shot that drops about 30 feet, and the finish is the best stretch: the par-3 7th, then the short par-4 8th, whose fairway drapes over a high dune ridge with exposed dunes left of the green, then the par-5 9th. One local quirk: a driveway sits short of the par-3 5th, and a mishit that finds it can bounce up onto the green.
There's a clubhouse with a pro shop and an on-site pro for lessons, and a short-game program is in the works.
It's one of 46 courses Yoink watches in the Long Island area, and the closest alternative is Willow Creek Golf & Country Club, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
