San Diego Golf Courses & Tee Times

San Diego public golf starts with the city. Torrey Pines sits on the cliffs above the Pacific in La Jolla, on the site of the old Camp Callan Army post. It opened in 1957 with two 18-hole courses, North and South. The South, remodeled by Rees Jones in 2001, held the 2008 U.S. Open that Tiger Woods won and the 2021 Open won by Jon Rahm. The PGA Tour has come every winter since 1968; the event played as the Farmers Insurance Open through 2026 and becomes The Sentry in 2027. Balboa Park, near downtown, is the city's oldest public golf facility, and Tiger won a Junior World title at Mission Bay.

Who runs public golf in San Diego

The City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department runs three courses: Torrey Pines, Balboa Park and Mission Bay. The city credits Torrey's design to William P. Bell, finished by his son William F. Bell after the father died in 1953. Balboa Park has a par-72 18 where Sam Snead holds the record, plus a nine-hole executive course. Mission Bay is a par-58 Ted Robinson executive course in Pacific Beach. Resident rates need a $25 Resident I.D. Card, open to anyone who lives in or owns a home within the city council districts, and it has to be shown at check-in. The gap is widest at Torrey: in 2026 a weekday South round is $73 for residents and $258 for non-residents. Coronado runs its own par-72 course, opened in 1957, with lower rates for Coronado residents.

Booking tee times in San Diego: the local rules

All three city courses release online tee times at 7 p.m. daily. Residents book up to 7 days out free, and 8 to 90 days out for a per-player fee: $10 at Balboa Park and Mission Bay, $32 at Torrey. Non-residents can book Torrey anywhere from 0 to 90 days out, but every non-resident Torrey time carries a $50 per-player fee that does not count toward green fees. The limit is two tee times, up to eight players, per person per day. Times are non-transferable, the player of record has to play, and you must check in 30 minutes early. Shut out? Register on the day-of waitlist at the course. Torrey closes to the public for about two weeks around the PGA Tour event (Jan. 20 to Feb. 2 in 2026). At Coronado you can book 14 days out online for $25 a player; residents who pre-register get a 7-day window; and times two days out go by phone or in person only.

Why tee times in San Diego are hard to get

Golf in San Diego is played all year. That means there's no off-season lull to wait for: weekend mornings are busy twelve months a year.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Keep a quicker course in your back pocket. Nine-hole and executive courses are easier to get on and play faster. Around here that includes Balboa Park 9-Hole, National City Golf Course and Springs At Borrego Golf Course.
