Goat Hill Park

A 1952 nine rebuilt as a par-65 short course and saved from developers by a 2014 town hall. Ocean views, dogs welcome, no dress code.

About Goat Hill Park

Goat Hill sits on a hill above Oceanside, just east of the 5, with ocean views on one side and, on a clear day, Palomar Mountain on the other. It's par 65 on 75 acres of rolling ground: not an executive course and not a regulation one, but what the course calls a short course. Several holes play uphill into the wind, and locals walk it with a light bag and 7 to 12 clubs. If you ride, carts stay on the paths on every par 3 and off the slopes.

It opened in 1952 as a par-36 nine called Oceanside-Carlsbad Country Club. Ludwig Keehn rebuilt it as an 18-hole short course in the early 1990s and it became Center City Golf Course, though everyone called it Goat Hill. The Lacey family got it protected as public land in the 1980s, so it can't be developed without a public vote. After Keehn died in 2004 the city struggled with it and asked developers for proposals. At a packed 2014 town hall the golfers won, and a group led by John Ashworth has run it since July 1, 2014.

The motto is 'World Class / Working Class.' Dogs are allowed, there's no dress code, and there's music around the clubhouse. Kids and their parents play the three-hole Playground course free, with an honor box for anyone who wants to chip in.

It's one of 4 courses in Oceanside on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Arrowood Golf Course, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
