About Torrey Pines — South
The South is the big one at Torrey Pines, the City of San Diego's 36-hole municipal facility in La Jolla. The city describes both courses the same way: tight fairways, lush rough, lots of sand and real length. The South has the most of all of it, at 7,804 yards since Rees Jones remodeled it in 2001. The map survey counts 81 bunkers and only about 43 feet of elevation change, with water in play on a single hole, so the defense is length, sand and rough. Torrey Pines opened in 1957. William P. Bell drew up the plan and died in 1953, and his son William F. Bell finished the job. The PGA Tour arrived in 1968, when the San Diego Open moved here as the Andy Williams San Diego Open and Tom Weiskopf won. The event, now the Farmers Insurance Open, uses both courses and plays its final two rounds on the South. Jack Nicklaus won it in 1969 after double-bogeying the last in a downpour, and Tiger Woods won it in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
After the Jones remodel the South hosted the U.S. Open in 2008 and again in 2021. It's still a city muni, and the golf shop is one of the largest in the western U.S.
