About Torrey Pines — North
The North is the other half of the city's 36 at Torrey Pines, next to the South, and the city closes both for the PGA Tour event each winter. William P. Bell designed the pair and his son William F. Bell finished them in 1957. It's par 72 and plays 6,781 yards from the Brown tees, with a 7,258-yard Black set that's permission only. Canyons run along the property and play as penalty areas, and the city's own description of both courses is tight fairways, lush rough and plenty of sand.
Tom Weiskopf's nine-month renovation, which reopened the course in late 2016 for more than $12 million, is the reason it plays differently from what older regulars remember. He cut the bunkers from 59 to 41, rebuilt all 18 greens bigger and in bentgrass, and swapped the nines. "The back nine is so iconic with its incredible views," he said, so now the clifftop stretch is how you finish. The map survey shows water in play on just one hole; the canyons are the bigger worry. It's a municipal course, and San Diego residents pay a fraction of what visitors do.
It's one of 2 courses in La Jolla on Yoink, and Torrey Pines — South is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
