Sacramento Golf Courses & Tee Times

Sacramento golf starts at Haggin Oaks, where the Alister MacKenzie course has been open since 1932. The city's history page says Ben Hogan won his first professional check there, $350 for third at the 1938 Sacramento Open, and Ken Venturi won the 1950 California State Fair event there. William Land, built in 1924, is the city's oldest course. Bing Maloney came in 1952, laid out by city employee Michael J. McDonaugh, who had worked on the crews that built Cypress Point, Pasatiempo and the MacKenzie course at Haggin Oaks. The county added Ancil Hoffman, a 1965 William Francis Bell design on the American River.

Who runs public golf in Sacramento

Two public systems cover most of it. The City of Sacramento owns Haggin Oaks (MacKenzie and Arcade Creek), Bing Maloney (18 holes plus the Express 9), William Land and Bartley Cavanaugh, and Morton Golf runs all four. Discounts come through the City Play Card, which costs $40 a year and takes up to 10% off green fees and carts for adults, up to 20% for seniors 60 and over, and up to 50% for juniors. With a Junior Play Card, kids play free at the city courses alongside a paying adult, any time in 2026 and after 11 AM from 2027, and anyone 18 and under plays the Bing Maloney Express 9 free. Sacramento County Regional Parks owns Ancil Hoffman in Carmichael, Cherry Island in Elverta, Mather and the 9-hole Campus Commons. Cherry Island is run by Empire Golf Management and Mather by Course Co Inc., and the county's golf fund gets no general fund money.

Booking tee times in Sacramento: the local rules

The city courses book online or by phone up to 30 days ahead; Haggin Oaks and Bing Maloney both say so on their booking pages. Haggin Oaks and Bing Maloney use dynamic pricing, so rates move with demand and weather, and they tell each player in a group to book individually online to get the lowest rate. William Land takes walk-ins but recommends booking ahead on weekends.

Why tee times in Sacramento are hard to get

With golf weather most of the year in Sacramento, the pressure never really lets up. Weekend mornings book up in every month.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Keep a quicker course in your back pocket. Nine-hole and executive courses are easier to get on and play faster. Around here that includes 9 at the Hill (Formerly Foothill Golf Course) - Foothill / 9 At The Hill, Antelope Greens Golf Course and Black Oak Golf Course.
