NC Triad — Greensboro & Winston Golf Courses & Tee Times

The Triad has some of the deepest public golf history in the South. The PGA Tour has come to Greensboro every year since the Greater Greensboro Open began in 1938; Sam Snead won it eight times, the last at 52 in 1965. The city's Gillespie course, a 1941 WPA project, is where six Black men led by Dr. George Simkins Jr. teed off in December 1955 against the whites-only rule, a case that ended segregation on Greensboro's public courses. In Winston-Salem, Winston Lake opened in 1956 for the city's Black golfers. And just west of town, Forsyth County's Tanglewood Park hosted the 1974 PGA Championship, won by Lee Trevino by one over Jack Nicklaus.

Who runs public golf in NC Triad — Greensboro & Winston

Public golf here is mostly run by cities and one county. Greensboro's municipal course is Gillespie, a nine-hole layout with dual tees for an 18-hole round, plus a short course and range; the city has committed more than $3 million to reworking it. The City of High Point lists two: Blair Park, nine holes in 1931 and 18 by the mid-1940s, and Oak Hollow, a Pete Dye course from 1972. Winston-Salem runs Winston Lake, and its golf page also lists Reynolds Park, managed by T-Square Golf. Forsyth County owns Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, with two Robert Trent Jones Sr. 18s and a par-3 course. Bryan Park in Greensboro, 36 holes managed by Pinnacle Golf Properties, is another public option.

Why tee times in NC Triad — Greensboro & Winston are hard to get

Spring and fall are peak season in NC Triad — Greensboro & Winston. In summer the heat pushes everyone toward early morning, so the first few hours of the day fill before anything else.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Widen the map. If your first choice is full, check the next town over. Greensboro has 2 courses on Yoink and Eden has 2.
