About Winston Lake Golf Course
Winston Lake is the City of Winston-Salem's hill course: 480 acres of rolling woodland, narrow fairways with trees on both sides, steep cart paths, and Brushy Fork and Frazier creeks waiting at the bottom of the ravines. It's short on paper, 6,213 yards from the longest of its three sets of tees in the 2023 historic nomination, with a 70.2 rating and 132 slope, so the test is keeping it in the corridor, not length. The pond by the 3rd green went in in 1985.
The greens changed in 2014, when all of them were reshaped and switched from bentgrass to Diamond Zoysia. They came out about 32 percent bigger than the originals, which the city says gives more options for pin placement. The city has also taken out select trees around tees, fairways and greens to open up sight lines, and the driving range has reopened.
The history is the reason it's on the National Register. The course opened on June 16, 1956, for Winston-Salem's Black residents, who until then could use the city's public course just once a week. F. Ellwood Allen laid out the first nine on a $75,000 city appropriation, and pro Ralph Richardson counted 112 golfers on opening weekend. The Winston Lake Golfers Association, formed in 1960, pushed the city to finish the back nine, which Ellis Maples, a Pinehurst native who learned under Donald Ross, completed in 1964. The United Golfers Association held events here in the late 1950s and 1960s, and Winston-Salem Teachers College won its fourth straight CIAA title here in 1962. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 2023.
