About Gillespie Golf Course
Gillespie is Greensboro's city course on 104 acres off Florida Street in east Greensboro, laid out by Perry Maxwell as a Works Progress Administration project and opened in 1941. It's nine holes with two sets of tee boxes, so you can play it as an 18, and there's a short course, a driving range, a pro shop and a grill. It's also home to First Tee - Central Carolina, it was the first course in North Carolina to offer the PGA HOPE program for veterans, and it teaches adaptive golf with a standing cart for players with mobility differences.
The history is why people know the name. By the late 1940s the city had leased the course for a token fee to a private group, which kept Black golfers out and sent them to Nocho Park, a poor course next to a sewage plant. On December 7, 1955, Dr. George Simkins Jr., Phillip Cook, Elijah Herring, Samuel Murray, Joseph Sturdivant and Leon Wolfe paid their 75-cent green fees, were refused the register, and played nine holes anyway while the head pro threatened them with a club. In 1957 a federal court struck down the leasing scheme in Simkins v. City of Greensboro.
Days before the order took effect, the clubhouse burned to the ground, and the city closed the course. It reopened on December 7, 1962, seven years to the day after the Six played, and Simkins hit the first tee shot. A 2024 mural of the Six now stands at the course. The 2024 master plan, backed by more than $3 million in public money and a $250,000 PGA Places to Play grant, lays out course renovations, better practice facilities and a revitalized clubhouse.
