Asheville & the NC Mountains Golf Courses & Tee Times

Golf in the North Carolina mountains goes back more than a century. The Grove Park Inn course in Asheville was built in 1899, before the inn itself, and Donald Ross redesigned it in 1924. Ross also drew Asheville Municipal, which opened in 1927, and the original front nine at Black Mountain, a 1929 course whose 747-yard par-6 17th was once the longest hole in the world. Hurricane Helene hit hard in September 2024. Muni's front nine sat in the Swannanoa River floodplain and went under water, and Black Mountain came back one nine at a time.

Who runs public golf in Asheville & the NC Mountains

The City of Asheville owns Muni. The city's project page says it was the first public course in North Carolina and the first integrated public course in the Southeast. It is home to the Skyview Golf Tournament, and the clubhouse and course were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Before Helene it logged over 44,000 starts a year, a fifth of them by annual passholders. The back nine reopened on October 28, 2024. The front nine is a temporary disc golf course while Forse Golf Design plans the restoration, with construction expected to start in 2027.

Booking tee times in Asheville & the NC Mountains: the local rules

At Black Mountain you can book online around the clock or call the shop between 7:30am and 5:30pm. Muni runs separate public and City of Asheville resident tee sheets, but we did not find the booking window for either. Expect Muni to be a nine-hole round until the front nine returns.

Why tee times in Asheville & the NC Mountains are hard to get

Spring and fall are peak season in Asheville & the NC Mountains. In summer the heat pushes everyone toward early morning, so the first few hours of the day fill before anything else.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

Booked-up doesn't mean gone. Plans change: groups cancel ahead of the course's cancellation deadline (often 24 to 48 hours out), players drop when the forecast turns, and a group that shrinks leaves an open spot. Those times quietly come back on the booking page, usually for minutes, not hours.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
