About Black Mountain Golf Course

Black Mountain has been here since 1929, and the front nine is Donald Ross's. It's the Town of Black Mountain's course, sitting at the foot of the Black Mountain Range 17 miles east of Asheville, and it winds through town. It's only 6,215 yards and par 71, but the holes are tucked in the trees with real elevation change, and the greens are small and sloped.

The hole people come for is the 17th: a 747-yard par 6 from the blues (692 from the whites, 634 from the reds) that was at one time the longest hole in the world. The course's own advice is that 6 is a great score and a birdie 5 is something to celebrate. Look up on the par-3 10th, where Mount Mitchell is in view, and on the 13th you hit a short iron over a pond.

Tees sit close to the greens, so it's easy to walk, though walking is allowed only after 1 p.m. Hurricane Helene closed part of the course, and it came back in stages; as of fall 2026 the front nine has reopened and all 18 are in play. It's open every day of the year except Christmas, weather permitting, and the Green Tee Grille is there at the turn.

It's one of 11 courses Yoink watches in the Asheville & the NC Mountains area, and the closest alternative is Omni Grove Park Inn & Spa, about 12 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
