Etowah Valley Golf Club

Edmund Ault built it on the old Etowah brickworks, where a post hole still turns up brick. Opened in 1967; hosted a televised Kemper event in 1971.

About Etowah Valley Golf Club

Etowah Valley sits on a plateau about 2,200 feet up in the mountains near Asheville, and its fairways run along rolling valley ground toward big bentgrass greens, some as large as 9,000 square feet. There are six sets of tees, and the club says you can play it in all four seasons.

The land has a story. Bruce Drysdale came to these mountains in 1914 and made brick at Etowah until the early 1950s. Etowah Brick went all over the eastern U.S., and the ground was left scarred. In 1964 Drysdale decided to turn the old Moland-Drysdale plant site into a golf course for the former employees who owned most of the land around it. He died the day the final survey was finished. Edmund B. Ault designed the course, construction began on December 4, 1964, and it opened on July 8, 1967, after the Todd family bought it. The club says you only have to dig a post hole to find some of the millions of bricks made there.

It was the first course in Western North Carolina with fully irrigated fairways and paved cart paths all the way around. In 1971 the PGA picked it for the nationally televised Kemper Satellite Tournament. Back then a round cost $2.50 on weekdays. Today there's a heated pool, an event center and the Greenside Bar and Grill.
