Pelham Bay & Split Rock

Two 18s in NYC's largest park: Pelham Bay dates to 1901, and Split Rock is the 1936 WPA course Bobby Jones praised, with a 1776 battle wall by the 6th.

About Pelham Bay & Split Rock

This is New York City's only 36-hole public facility, two separate 18s inside Pelham Bay Park. Pelham Bay is the friendlier one: wide fairways, par 71, a 70.7 rating and 124 slope, and a two-tiered green at the 4th. Split Rock is the one people come for. It's par 70 but rates 70.0 with a 129 slope, on hillier ground with tighter, tree-lined fairways, and GOLF.com (2020) called it tree-lined without being too tight, with big greens full of knobs, mounds and plateaus.

Pelham Bay's roots go back to 1901, and the original course was laid out by civil engineer Lawrence Van Etten. In February 1934 the WPA started rebuilding it and building Split Rock on the other side of the railroad tracks; of the $3.5 million spent, $2.8 million went straight to workers. John Van Kleek, the Parks Department's architect for its New Deal courses, redesigned both. Bobby Jones played in 1936 and told the New York Times the work at Split Rock was splendid.

The history runs older than golf. In 1776 Massachusetts Patriots ambushed British and Hessian troops from behind stone walls at the Battle of Pell's Point, and those walls are still on Split Rock, visible from the 6th hole. Both courses share a 1936 Greek Revival clubhouse with a Grill Room, and deer, turkey and fox are regulars. There's no driving range, just a putting and chipping green, so warm up accordingly.
