Split Rock is the tighter, hillier half of the city's only 36-hole facility, on the far side of the railroad tracks from Pelham Bay in Pelham Bay Park. It's par 70, rated 70.0 with a 129 slope, and the club pitches it as the tougher test of the two: hilly ground, tree-lined fairways and bunkers placed to make you think. GOLF.com's take is that it's tree-lined without being too tight, and the greens are the thing, big and full of knobs, waves and plateaus.

It was a Depression project. WPA crews started in February 1934, and of the $3.5 million spent, $2.8 million went straight to the workers. Robert Moses opened Split Rock in 1936, and John Van Kleek designed it. Bobby Jones came through that year and said what he saw, "particularly at Split Rock," was "entirely worth the visit."

The history goes back further than that. A stone wall from the 1776 Battle of Pell's Point runs beside the course, and you can see it on the 6th. Deer, turkeys and foxes are regular company. In 2009 American Golf, which runs the facility under a city contract, put $10.8 million into new drainage, cart paths, tees, greens and bunkers, plus the clubhouse. There's no driving range, just a putting and chipping green.
