West Sayville Golf Course

William Mitchell's 1968 county course on the old Meadow Edge estate. The 13th plays into a south wind toward the Great South Bay and Fire Island.

About West Sayville Golf Course

West Sayville is one of Suffolk County's four courses, an 18-hole par 72 on the Great South Bay. It opened in May 1968, one of the county courses planned in the mid-'60s, and William Mitchell designed it. From the blue tees it rates 72.0 with a 132 slope, which is stiffer than the par suggests. The whites play 69.7 and 126, the golds 68.4 and 123.

The county's signature hole is the 13th, a 401-yard par 4 that plays longer than the card because of the prevailing south wind. Your second shot goes to an elevated, rolling green with the bay and Fire Island behind it. The county's own advice: four is a good score. Expect that wind to be part of the round on the holes near the water.

The course sits on Meadow Edge, the old Anson Hard estate, built in 1905 to a design by Isaac H. Green. The estate is now Charles R. Dominy County Park, and it shares the grounds with the Long Island Maritime Museum. The Meadow Edge Restaurant does food and catering, and there's a range, a putting green and a pro shop, run for the county by RC Links.

It's one of 46 courses Yoink watches in the Long Island area, and the closest alternative is Timber Point Golf Course, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
