Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course

Tom Fazio built it in 1989 on Andrew Mellon's old Gold Coast estate: a tight front nine, heavily contoured greens, and a par-3 12th off the mansion patio.

About Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course

This is the Town of Oyster Bay's course, officially the Honorable Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, and it's a Tom Fazio design. It's a par 70 with narrow fairways, water, and both sand and grass bunkers. Golf on Long Island calls the front nine very tight and the greens heavily contoured, and describes the whole thing as hilly. The map survey counts 47 bunkers, water near seven holes with three forced carries, and trees along seven. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The hole locals talk about is the par-4 4th: a dogleg to a blind landing area on the right, then straight uphill to a hidden, triple-tiered green. Later, the little par-3 12th tees off right in front of the brick patio behind the mansion, so there may be wedding guests watching.

The land has a story. The estate, Woodlands, was built in 1918 to a design by William Adams Delano. Andrew Mellon bought it in 1928 and gave it to his daughter Ailsa as a wedding present; she married diplomat David Bruce and lived there until her death. The town bought the Bruce estate in 1979, and supervisor Joseph Colby pushed to turn it into a course for residents. It opened on April 18, 1989, the first new course on Long Island in a decade, and was renamed for Colby in 2013. The mansion is now the Mansion at Oyster Bay catering hall and Clubhouse Grille.

It's one of 46 courses Yoink watches in the Long Island area, and the closest alternative is Cantiague Park Golf Course, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
