About Bethpage Red

Most people put the Red second only to the Black at Bethpage, and Wikipedia's list of the five by difficulty agrees. What makes it hard is length: a run of long par 4s, some curling through the trees as doglegs, others marching across the park's open, windy flat ground. It's a regular host of local tournaments. Carts are allowed.

It opened in 1935 with the Blue, a year ahead of the Black. State Parks and the course site credit A.W. Tillinghast, hired when the Bethpage Park Authority bought the old Lenox Hills Country Club in the early 1930s; as with the Black, the credit is argued, and Wikipedia gives the Red and Blue to park superintendent Joseph Burbeck.

The Red is priced and rationed like a smaller Black. You can book it once every 14 days, and out-of-state players pay double. The rate card dated February 2025 has 18 holes at $43 on weekdays and $48 on weekends for New York residents, and $90 and $100 for everyone else. In 2026 State Parks listed it open April 1 to November 29, weather permitting.

Booking a tee time at Bethpage Red

Tee times go through the State Parks online reservation system, the only way to book at Bethpage. Verified New York residents can book seven days out and everyone else five, and the sheet opens at 7 pm. To get verified, email a photo of your NYS driver license or DMV non-driver ID or show it in person. Same-day times can be booked online up to 3 hours ahead, each player pays a $5 booking fee, and since May 1, 2025, more than six cancellations in a month gets your account locked for a while.
