About Bethpage State Park (all 5 courses)
Bethpage is five 18-hole courses in one state park in Farmingdale: the Black, Red, Blue, Green and Yellow. Every round starts from the same clubhouse, and roughly 300,000 rounds a year go through it. Blue and Yellow stay open year round. The Black runs from mid-April to mid-November and is closed Mondays except holidays. Carts are allowed on the other four courses, not the Black, so plan to walk it.
The park grew out of the Yoakum family estate and the old Lenox Hills Country Club. The Bethpage Park Authority bought it in the early 1930s and hired A.W. Tillinghast to build the Black, Red and Blue and rework Lenox Hills into the Green. The Black opened in 1936, and Alfred Tull's Yellow followed in 1958. State Parks credits Tillinghast; other histories give much of the Black to park superintendent Joseph Burbeck, with Tillinghast consulting.
The Black is the one with the sign. Since the 1960s it has stood by the first tee: "The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers." In 2002 it became the first publicly owned and operated course to host the U.S. Open, and Tiger Woods was the only player under par. Lucas Glover won the rain-delayed 2009 Open, Brooks Koepka shot a course-record 63 on his way to the 2019 PGA, and Europe won the 2025 Ryder Cup there 15–13. The 2028 KPMG Women's PGA and the 2033 PGA are next.
Where you live matters on the Black and Red, where non-New Yorkers pay double. The rate card dated February 2025 has the Black at $70 on weekdays and $80 on weekends for state residents, and $140 and $160 for everyone else. Blue, Green and Yellow are $38 and $43 for 18, with no residency rule.
It's one of 6 courses in Farmingdale on Yoink, and Bethpage Black is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
Booking a tee time at Bethpage State Park (all 5 courses)
Every reservation goes through the free State Parks system at parks.ny.gov/golf. Verified New York residents can book seven days out and everyone else five, with the sheet opening at 7 pm. To get verified, email a photo of your NYS driver license or DMV non-driver ID (number blacked out) or show it in person. You can book the Black once every 28 days and the Red once every 14. Since May 1, 2025, more than six cancellations in a month gets your account locked for a while. Walk-ups still work on the Black: the first 6 to 12 tee times, then one foursome an hour. Each player pays a $5 booking fee, and a no-show costs $15. (State Parks reservation guide, May 2025.)
