Santapogue Creek Golf Course (Bergen Point)

William Mitchell's layout on Great South Bay was ready in 1969 but lost three holes to the treatment plant next door before opening in 1972.

About Santapogue Creek Golf Course (Bergen Point)

This is Suffolk County's course in West Babylon, down by Great South Bay. The county's wastewater plant takes up the waterfront between the course and the bay, which is a big part of why the county dropped the old Bergen Point name in May 2026. It's a par 71 that plays 6,590 yards from the Blacks (73.0 rating, 130 slope), with Blue, Gold and Red tees down to 5,518. The front is the long side at par 37. The back is par 34, and it finishes with two par 3s in a row at 17 and 18.

William F. Mitchell laid it out during the late-1960s park-building boom, and it was ready to play in 1969. Then cost overruns pushed the treatment plant next door onto land the new course already occupied. The course lost three holes, others near the south end were changed, and it didn't open until 1972.

The new name reaches further back. The course sits along Santapogue Creek, between Santapogue Neck and Santapogue Point, and the county's resolution cites William Wallace Tooker's 1911 book The Indian Place Names of Long Island, which gives Santapogue as the earliest recorded name for the area. Bergen Point came from the Bergen family, who settled there in the 1870s. The county took maintenance back in-house and spent the winter and spring of 2026 on irrigation, the range and the clubhouse.
