About Shelter Island Country Club

Everyone on the island calls it Goat Hill. It's nine holes of pasture golf, and it has barely changed since 1901. The whole thing is 2,512 yards, but don't expect flat ground. It sits on one of the highest points on Shelter Island, with views of Peconic Bay and Dering Harbor.

Seven of the nine holes are blind. You'll hit over rises and trust the line, and the bounces change with the season. Short doesn't mean easy. First time out, ask the pro shop where to aim.

The history is the best part. The Shelter Island Heights Association built it for members and guests. Wesley Smith, the first superintendent, shaped it with pick and shovel, horses and donkey carts. William and Olive Congdon ran it from 1942 for 34 years. The town bought it in the late 1970s, and a volunteer board has run it since. It went on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, and golf has never stopped there.

In 2026 the public rate is $25 for 9 or 18 holes on weekdays, and on weekends before May 15 or after Sept. 15. Summer weekends are $30 for nine or $45 for 18. Play often? Memberships start at $500.
