Indian Island Golf Course

Suffolk County's Riverhead 18, built on an old duck farm on the Peconic River: par 72, open year-round, Green Key to book.

About Indian Island Golf Course

Indian Island is Suffolk County's course in Riverhead, an 18-hole par 72 on 156 acres where the Peconic River meets Sawmill Creek. The county counts about 10,000 feet of shoreline on the property, and the river is never far away.

The ground has a story. This was the Hollis Warner Duck Farm, and after 1938 Warner was the biggest duck producer around, at up to 500,000 birds a year. In the 1960s the county pushed to close duck farms over water pollution. It took title to the Warner land in 1964 and turned it into a golf course, part of a mid-'60s plan for new public courses in West Babylon, West Sayville and Riverhead.

It's the one county course that stays open all year; the others run March through December. There's a driving range open until dusk, a putting green, a pro shop, and VIP on the 19th Tee for food after the round.

It's one of 3 courses in Riverhead on Yoink, and Cherry Creek Golf Links is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
