About Eisenhower Park - Red
The Red is the big one of Eisenhower Park's three 18s: a par 72 that stretches past 7,100 yards from the back tees, rated 74.4 with a 136 slope on the county scorecard. It's also relatively flat, with short walks from green to tee, and the county says that makes it friendly for players and spectators alike during tournaments.
The history goes back further than the park. Devereux Emmet designed it in 1914 for the Salisbury Golf Club, a club started by A.T. Stewart's circle that once ran five 18-hole courses. Emmet was married to one of Stewart's nieces and had reached the quarterfinals of the 1904 British Amateur. In 1926 Salisbury hosted the PGA Championship, and Walter Hagen won it for a purse of $11,100.
The club couldn't pay its taxes in the Depression, so Nassau County took the land. It became a county park in 1944 and was renamed for Dwight Eisenhower in 1969. The pros came back in the 2000s for the Champions Tour's Commerce Bank Championship. Mike Reid, the 2005 winner, told Newsday it "just requires good golf from the first tee to the 18th green," and Loren Roberts, who won in 2008, called the fees "the deal of the century."
