Billings & Red Lodge Golf Courses & Tee Times
Billings has about ten golf courses within 20 minutes of downtown, split evenly between public daily-fee courses and private clubs, according to Visit Billings. Golf here goes back to late 1922, when Hilands Golf Club opened with six holes on a site Walter Hagen picked out. Hilands is private, as is Yellowstone Country Club, a Robert Trent Jones design. The public side runs from Lake Hills, a 1957 George H. Schneiter Sr. layout, to the 36 holes at Pryor Creek out in Huntley. Farther out, Red Lodge Mountain plays from about mid-May to early October, once the snow melts.

Who runs public golf in Billings & Red Lodge
We found no city-run regulation course in Billings. The one link to the city is the Exchange City Par 3, a non-profit course run by the Downtown Exchange Club that shares its profits with the City of Billings for parks and recreation projects. Lake Hills is an 18-hole public course. Eaglerock was built by Matt Martinson and his father Vernon as a daily-fee course with homes around it, and opened in 2002. Pryor Creek, founded in 1980 by Elmer Link and still managed by his son Joe, is one of two 36-hole facilities in Montana. Note that Laurel Golf Club, west of town, is private: golf there is for members only.

Why tee times in Billings & Red Lodge are hard to get
The season in Billings & Red Lodge is short, running roughly from late spring into fall, so every good weekend in that window is contested. The first warm Saturdays of the year are the hardest tee times to get.
Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.
When tee time cancellations happen
Booked-up doesn't mean gone. Plans change: groups cancel ahead of the course's cancellation deadline (often 24 to 48 hours out), players drop when the forecast turns, and a group that shrinks leaves an open spot. Those times quietly come back on the booking page, usually for minutes, not hours.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.
- Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
- Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
- Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
- Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
- Widen the map. If your first choice is full, check the next town over. Huntley has 2 courses on Yoink and Billings has 1.
