About Eaglerock Golf Course

Eaglerock is the Martinson family's course. Matt Martinson grew up on the land, and in the late 1980s he and his father Vernon decided to turn the farm, which had been growing wheat, barley and hay, into golf. They built it themselves over many years, planned from the start as a daily-fee course with homes around it, and it sits about 15 minutes from downtown Billings. The family still runs it, and the clubhouse bar pours Montana craft beer.

It's a par 72 that the state golf association lists at 7,152 yards from the back, with a 74.2 rating and 127 slope, so there's plenty of length if you want it. The fun is in the short holes, though. The course's own notes call the 6th drivable for some, the 16th drivable for many players and the 17th drivable for longer hitters, with a ditch and bunkers waiting for anyone who misses. The 12th tee shows you everything sloping toward Rattlesnake Reservoir, and the downhill par-3 8th is often into the wind, so take care with the club.

The lake is the backdrop for the whole round, and the course makes a point of its sunsets over the water. Rather than walk or ride, you can rent a FINN scooter for $30 for 18 holes.
