About Lake Hills Golf Course

The history is better than most. George Schneiter Sr. was a Utah pro who played the PGA Tour from 1944 to 1950, beat Sam Snead in the quarterfinals of the 1944 PGA Championship, and then ran the PGA's Tournament Bureau, roughly the Tour commissioner's job of its day. He spent the summer of 1956 in Billings drawing up the course and clubhouse, and in August 1957 he opened the front nine before it was quite done because local golfers wouldn't wait. His son Jerry was the first head pro.
Schneiter and his wife Beatrice were killed in a car crash in 1964 on the drive up from Salt Lake to Lake Hills, and the course passed to George Jr. The PGA put the elder Schneiter in its Hall of Fame in 2017. The course still hosts state events, including the 2026 Montana State Junior Championships.
