Montana Golf Courses & Tee Times

Montana golf started in Butte, the state's biggest city a century ago, and the first State Amateur was played at Butte Country Club in 1917. Early greens were sand, oiled and raked smooth; the first grass green came in 1931 at Missoula Country Club. The state had never hosted a USGA event until the summer of 1994, when it got two: the U.S. Junior Girls at Meadow Lark Country Club in Great Falls and the U.S. Amateur Public Links at Eagle Bend in Bigfork. Helena's Edeann Anderson won six straight state titles starting at 14 and later, as Edeann Ihlanfeldt, the 1982 USGA Senior Women's.

Who runs public golf in Montana

Public golf in western Montana leans on local golf associations. The Whitefish Lake Golf Association has run the city's course on a not-for-profit basis since the 1940s, and Buffalo Hill in Kalispell is a nonprofit on city-leased land. The Montana State Golf Association runs the State Amateur, the State Junior (since 1967), the State Mid-Amateur (since 1987) and the Montana Cup between amateurs and pros (since 1991). It gives free memberships to juniors 18 and under linked to an active member, promotes Youth on Course rounds for $5 or less, has funded more than 140 scholarships since 1991, and makes junior program grants to courses, schools and community groups each year (applications due April 1).

Getting a tee time in Montana

The season in Montana is short, running roughly from late spring into fall, so every good weekend in that window is contested. The first warm Saturdays of the year are the hardest tee times to get.

Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
