Flathead Valley & Glacier Golf Courses & Tee Times

Golf in the Flathead goes back to the New Deal. Whitefish Lake's first holes were cleared by local golfers, then finished with Work Project Authority money in 1935 as a golf course that doubled as an emergency landing strip; the grand opening tournament was May 24, 1936. Buffalo Hill in Kalispell dates itself to 1918, and its original nine was finished in 1939 with WPA help. Eagle Bend in Bigfork hosted the 1994 U.S. Amateur Public Links, one of the first two USGA events ever played in Montana, and Whitefish Lake hosted the 2005 Pacific Northwest PGA Championship. Down at the south end of Flathead Lake, Polson Bay has been open to the public since 1938.

Who runs public golf in Flathead Valley & Glacier

Much of the valley's public golf sits on city land run by golfers' associations. The Whitefish Lake Golf Association leases its course from the City of Whitefish and has run it on a not-for-profit basis since the 1940s; it now has two 18s, North and South. Buffalo Hill is a 501(c)(4) on land leased from the City of Kalispell, with the 18-hole course plus the Cameron 9, its original 1930s nine. Polson Bay has 27 holes and is the only course with fairways on the shore of Flathead Lake. Season passes are priced by residency at Whitefish: a 2026 early individual pass was $955 for Whitefish School District residents, $1,240 for other Flathead Valley residents and $1,480 for non-residents.

Booking tee times in Flathead Valley & Glacier: the local rules

Book ahead in summer, and at Whitefish it costs more to do it: in 2026 an 18-hole peak-season round was $100 if booked within two days and $112 if booked further out. Walk-up golf still exists at Buffalo Hill, where the Cameron 9 takes no tee times and runs first come, first served. It used to be harder: after the 1980s remodel at Whitefish, getting a tee time two days out often meant being in line by 4:30 a.m.

Why tee times in Flathead Valley & Glacier are hard to get

Golfers in Flathead Valley & Glacier get maybe six months of good weather, and they all want the same weekend mornings. Demand bunches up from May to September.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

Booked-up doesn't mean gone. Plans change: groups cancel ahead of the course's cancellation deadline (often 24 to 48 hours out), players drop when the forecast turns, and a group that shrinks leaves an open spot. Those times quietly come back on the booking page, usually for minutes, not hours.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Widen the map. If your first choice is full, check the next town over. Libby has 2 courses on Yoink and Kalispell has 1.
