Louisiana Golf Courses & Tee Times

Louisiana's state golf association, the LGA, dates to 1920, when it held the first Louisiana State Amateur at Shreveport Country Club. It added a Junior Amateur in 1958, and players like Hal Sutton and David Toms came through it. The state's PGA Tour stop has a long history too: the tournament now called the Zurich Classic began in 1938 on a City Park course in New Orleans and has been played at TPC Louisiana, a Pete Dye course open to the public, since 2005. For the traveling golfer, the state promotes the Audubon Golf Trail, formed in 2001 and grown to 18 courses by 2022.

Who runs public golf in Louisiana

In New Orleans, public golf means City Park's two courses, the city-owned Joseph M. Bartholomew, Sr. Municipal in Pontchartrain Park and Audubon Park's par-62 course. In Baton Rouge, the parish parks agency BREC runs the public courses, including Webb Memorial, once LSU's course, and Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s Santa Maria. BREC opens its 18-hole tee sheets at noon, 13 days out. For juniors, the LGA runs the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour for ages 11 to 18, set up with the Gulf States PGA in 2019, and Youth on Course, where members ages 6 to 18 play participating courses for $5 or less. LGA memberships start at $50.

Getting a tee time in Louisiana

In Louisiana, the busiest months are spring and fall. In summer, everyone wants to finish before the heat, so early tee times go first.

Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
