Historic City Park Golf Course

Tom Bendelow routed it in 1926 over a fault line, so it climbs and drops 25 feet under big oaks. First public course in town; on the National Register.

About Historic City Park Golf Course

This is BREC's short, hilly nine next to the LSU Lakes, and hilly is the surprise in south Louisiana. Tom Bendelow routed it in 1926 across a natural fault line, so the 40 acres rise and fall as much as 25 feet, with big oaks, lake views and a small bayou running through. Since the 2007 renovation it's four par 3s and five par 4s, about 2,300 yards, so it's a quick nine.

Don't let the length fool you. BREC calls the 7th the toughest hole: a right-to-left dogleg over rolling ground to a small green with sand and water around it. The 8th is a long uphill par 3 that's nearly blind from the back tee, so take enough club and be happy with three.

The course was finished in 1926 and officially opened on August 3, 1928. It was Baton Rouge's first public course and its only one until the mid-1950s, and in 2002 the course, clubhouse and old pump house were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bendelow, known as the Johnny Appleseed of Golf, also designed Van Cortlandt Park in New York. The clubhouse doubles as the Baton Rouge Art Gallery. A 2023 petition pushed to turn the course into open park space; BREC said it has no plans to repurpose it, and the Friends of City Park group reports a record 28,225 rounds in 2025.

It's one of 2 courses in Baton Rouge on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Webb Memorial Golf Course, about 1 mile away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
