About Bayou Oaks at City Park - South Course
Golf in City Park goes back to 1902, and before Hurricane Katrina the park had 72 holes. The storm closed all of it in 2005. The North Course came back in 2008; the South took until April 21, 2017, when Rees Jones and Greg Muirhead opened a new par 72 on 220 acres that used to be the East and West courses, across the street from the North. The rebuild cost $24 million from the City Park Improvement Association, the State of Louisiana and the Bayou District Foundation.
Don't expect a U.S. Open setup. The fairways are wide, there are only 46 bunkers, and most holes give you one or none to think about off the tee. Lagoons run all over the property, but it usually takes a real miss to find one, and there are very few forced carries. The greens are big and open in front, so the low runner works. It's long if you want it to be: 7,297 yards from the tips down to 5,039 from the reds, par 72. The 13,000-square-foot clubhouse opened with the course, with locker rooms and showers, and you walk through a tunnel to the double-decker range at the North Course. The Bayou District Foundation, one of the three backers, follows the East Lake model and sends part of the golf money to the Columbia Parc neighborhood just east of the park. Bring a collared shirt (no jeans); it's open from 7 a.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. on weekends, and the shop is at 1040 Filmore Avenue, (504) 483-9410.
