About Joseph Bartholomew Golf Course
This is the city's course in Pontchartrain Park, and its history is the reason to know it. The park land was cypress swamp until the 1940s, when it was drained and built as a park for African Americans in Jim Crow-era New Orleans. The course opened in 1956 as the Pontchartrain Golf Course, designed and built by Joseph M. Bartholomew Sr., the African American designer and golf pro who also laid out Metairie Golf Club and City Park's No. 1 and No. 2 courses. It was renovated in 1979 and renamed for him, the first African American inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame.
Hurricane Katrina's levee breaches left the whole park under more than ten feet of water and destroyed the clubhouse. Architect Garrett Gill rebuilt the course on Bartholomew's routing, stretched it by about 400 yards, dug nine lakes, removed a canal, buried the power lines and added gentle mounds and slopes to what had been flat ground. It reopened in 2011.
Today it's a par 72 with four sets of tees, Emerald Bermuda greens and 419 Bermuda fairways, and the lakes are in play. The city's Parks and Parkways department runs it, it's open all year, and there's a double-ended driving range, two practice greens and a new restaurant, The Back Nine, which opened January 10, 2026.
